The Hector Mine Earthquake occurred on October 16, 1999 at 2:46:44 AM PDT, 32 miles north of the town of Joshua Tree, CA. The magnitude of the quake was 7.1 on the Richter scale, and occurred at a depth of 0.01km below the earth's surface. This was the first major earthquake event to occur after the deployment of the Southern California Integrated GPS Network (SCIGN), an array of GPS sites used for seismic studies and other related research. Analysis of the Hector Mine Earthquake continues at all three SCIGN agencies. An overview of SOPAC's contribution follows, along with other general information about the quake. Interacive Map of SOPAC's estimated co-seismic displacements. Co-seismic estimates image provides a comparison between JPL, USGS and SOPAC results.
